GT4, released on December 28th, 2004, was equally well-received, selling 11.9 million copies, making it the top-selling racing game of that year. To this day, it holds the records for the highest-selling title in the franchise at a whopping 14.89 Million units sold to date. Even without the win under their belt, it is still regarded as one of the greatest series in gaming history, and it could still be considered a total win. It barely missed out on the Best Playstation Game of the Year, losing only due to its competition being such titles as Tony Hawk, Grand Theft Auto 3, and Metal Gear Solid: Sons of Liberty. It was GameSpot's #5 on the list of best driving games ever. With 14.8 million copies sold worldwide, it also introduced the GT fandom to online multiplayer options. It would introduce such cars as the BMW 328ci and Chrysler PT Cruiser '00. It was flying off of shelves almost as fast as it was placed. Being released April 28th, 2001, this title included better handling, and graphics, boasting 14 tracks and only 140 cars as opposed to GT2's insane count of over 600. GT3 would not only bring the series back to a fan favorite but also include several of the corrections fans had been pleading for. Regardless the title sold 9.37 million copies and is considered a financial success if an albeit critical fail for fans. Some blamed designers being far more concerned about expanding the car list than focusing on small but highly frustrating control errors or glitches. It was praised for corrections to previous control issues and much better graphics while simultaneously met with minor backlash from fans who felt many bugs had been left unresolved. GT2 would release on December 11th, 1999, to mixed reviews. The success would encourage PolyPhony to try and continue evolving content leading to a string of successful titles for years to come. It is still widely considered the most popular racing franchise offered by PlayStation to date, beating out such titles as Need for Speed, Midnight Club Racing, and even the official Nascar releases themselves. To date, the title has released 10.8 million copies. Featuring 11 tracks and 140 cars, along with several modification options to personalize - the game hit the market going from 0-100 in a matter of days. From individualizing the paint to setting the stiffness of your suspension, you were in control. SO! Let's pop the hood on this franchise and see what has kept car, racing, and general game enthusiasts coming back time and time again!Ĭreated by Kazunori Yamauchi, Gran Turismo promised not to be just another driving simulator, but a fully immersive experience that would not only allow the player to sit behind the wheel of such famous automobiles as the Aston Martin DBZ Coupe, the Chevy Camaro z28 30th anniversary edition, and the ever/eternally popular '67 Chevy Stingray, but also to be the master of their creation. With its newest title due to be released this upcoming week on March 4th, 2022, it seemed a great time to reach into the history of this iconic series before delving into the newest additions and features that the GT racing universe has to offer. Fast speed, sexy cars, and a simulation experience that has been driving its way through fans' hearts since its original release on December 23rd, 1997, Gran Turismo (with six major titles to date and several spin-offs to total 12 games in all) can safely be called one of the best and most long-lasting driving simulations in console history.
